Trusting Electronic Commerce

Speaker  David Cherrill, Security Practice, Logica
Summary Security in Electronic Commerce is a major concern to both companies and consumers, many of whom have no problems in giving their credit card over the telephone or handing it to a waiter in a restaurant. Such is the perceived barrier to progress that IBM has made the security issue the subject of a TV ad! Dave Cherrill of Logica has kindly agreed to speak on this important subject.
Security of Electronic Commerce transactions is one of the major concerns for both users and operators of schemes. David Cherrill will take a look through some of the less well understood aspects of security, and in particular reveal a practical approach to gaining confidence in the security of the IT systems used.

Security topics to include:

  • Issues for an organisation embarking on an electronic commerce project
  • Separating Functionality issues from Confidence issues
  • A practical approach to managing security using ITSEC principles

David Cherrill

David Cherrill is Business Controller of the Logica Security Practice (which includes the largest Independent Security Evaluation Facility in Europe). His interest in the area started when a system he was managing was hacked via an external link in 1986.

He has worked as an security evaluator and secure system designer since 1987, completing two large secure system implementations for the UK Government and NATO. He completed an DL-MBA at Henley in 1993, and for the last three years has worked as a bridge between the Government sector who understand security - and the commercial sector who need security!! Clients include Microsoft, Sun, Oracle, Cyberguard, as well as various UK banks.
