Teachers will Teach with IT but will they Work with IT ?

Speaker Jason Gould, MD, Education Direct
Summary We are all well aware that education and training is a hot political issue. The government is committed to wiring up all schools, but in many respects, after finding the funds, that is the easy bit. Making effective use of the technology is key. This challenge is not just an issue for schools, teachers, parents and businesses that recruit school leavers. Businesses also have a similar challenge of making sure that their staff, suppliers, distributors can all use IT effectively. And in the years to come, many predict that competitive edge will come through knowledge management and exploitation. I'm sure therefore that this presentation by Education Direct will be of interest to a wide audience.

The UK has the largest number of computers per child in Primary education of any country in Europe. Over half of these computers are more than 5 years old, however, and are practically useless in today's IT environment. Did the UK peak too early? Will the National Grid for Learning put the UK ahead of the rest of Europe or will it become the first official cyber-space white elephant?

A Head of IT in a UK secondary school recently complained to BT CampusConnect that he couldn't get his computer to access his student's exam results on the Internet. When questioned about whether his Modem was switched on he replied "I'm not entirely sure what a modem is." More and more schools are now having their computer Networks managed by their students'. Is this good practical work experience or an accident waiting to happen? Computers and infrastructure investment are a funding issue, but is the real issue training?

What opportunities are there for businesses to help UK schools make the most of the new technologies and who is currently doing what?
