The Impact of RFID
Radio Frequency Identification Devices

Speaker 1 Andrew Berger -  VP Europe for Alien Technology
Speaker 2
Summary Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFID) are small smart chips attached to products that can uniquely identify every single item and can be read at a distance (compare this to bar codes that usually only identify a product type and must be scanned close up). These tiny electronic tags are set to revolutionise the supply chain. They will track every item from production line to check out and (unless disabled) to the end customer.

RFIDs have received a great deal of interest since Wal*Mart, The US Department Of Defence, Tesco and Metro all announced major rollout plans with suppliers for 2004/2005.  Global standards are now being defined through EPC Global and there is increasing acceptance that prices are falling fast enough to justify major rollouts of this technology.

In this presentation, we will look at how RFID will have a major impact on a range of industries including retail, consumer packaged goods, pharmaceuticals, airlines and automotive. The talk will include up to date case studies of European implementations and the required changes to supply chains and business processes.

As usual, there will be opportunity to network and ask questions.

Andrew will be accompanied by a speaker from one of the companies involved in RFID pilots in Europe.

Alien Technology
Alien Technology is Californian venture funded, privately held corporation specialising in the RFID market. It is a leading provider of Electronic Product Code (EPC) readers and tags for UHF. Using its patented manufacturing process called Fluidic Self Assembly, the company can efficiently assemble very large volumes of RFID chips. The chips in turn are packaged in tags or labels.
